Strong push to urge State Government changes to Pacific Hwy and Mowbray Rd intersection
In May 2022 Councillors supported my motion requesting an investigation of a designated right-hand turn lane and traffic control signal changes in Mowbray Road West, eastbound, into Pacific Highway, southbound, so motorists can access the Pacific Highway and not ‘rat run’ through Artarmon Village and residential streets.
What’s the problem?
The State Government and Council are investing over $8M to improve Artarmon’s village amenity, open spaces and prioritise pedestrians. The current traffic arrangements at the Pacific Highway and Mowbray Road intersection conflict starkly with this pedestrian-friendly vision as it forces significant volumes of traffic through Artarmon Village en route to the Gore Hill Freeway, St Leonards etc.
The additional traffic provides no benefit to the local Artarmon community; commuting motorists do not stop in the Village and the associated congestion makes it frustrating for residents.
Next steps
On 11 November 2022 I represented our local community at a constructive on-site meeting that included four Transport for NSW staff, our state rep Tim James, Council Officers and importantly the Artarmon Progress Association. Quite a gathering!
Council has since written to Tim James MP to confirm & action next steps:
- undertake a feasibility and impacts study of the intersection, funded and lead by Transport for NSW in collaboration with Council and representatives of the local community.
In July 2023, the Mayor sent a letter to the NSW Minister for Transport seeking an update on the comprehensive study Transport for NSW agreed to undertake of the intersection and surrounding road network.
In August 2023, Minister Graham advised that an investigation into the impacts of introducing a right-turn arrow was underway, and that, once complete, Transport for NSW will arrange a meeting with Council and the Artarmon Progress Association to discuss the findings.
I followed up recently however we have not received a response yet. Will keep you posted!
