Opposition to the Western Harbour Tunnel & Beaches Link Projects
What’s the problem?
- inadequate business case and poor community consultation
- billions of dollars of public money on toll roads (around $14 billion based on 2017 estimates)
- public transport alternatives not comprehensively scoped
- heavy tree loss and air quality issues (unfiltered stacks next to schools in Cammeray and Artarmon)
- destruction of Flat Rock Gully reserve and urban bushland exposing the toxic historical tip underneath – tunneled will cause contaminants to flow down the creek and into Middle Harbour
- road expansion fails to alleviate congestion (paradox of ‘induced demand’)
Update
On 8 September 2023, the NSW Government cancelled the Beaches Link project.
Transport for NSW will write to the Department of Planning and Environment to withdraw its State Significant Infrastructure Application for this project.
With the NSW Government confirming the cancellation of the Beaches Link project, Flat Rock Gully, Middle Harbour and so much more has been saved!!! What an incredible accomplishment from such a wonderful and inspiring community-led campaign. Hooray!

My actions
In October 2022 Councillors’ supported my motion calling on the NSW Government not to sign any further contracts or tenders for the Western Harbour Tunnel and Beaches Link toll road projects before the March 2023 election.
On 10 September 2022 I joined over 300 people who attended the Save Cammeray Park rally to express opposition to the Western Harbour Tunnel and to call on the NSW Government to stop and reassess the project.
In March 2022 Council resolved to write to our state member, Tim James MP, to state our opposition to the Beaches Link project.
